The thickness and density (basis weight) of sheet-like objects are measured non-contact (soft X-ray). Instead of measuring the thickness directly, the thickness and density (basis weight) are calculated by comparison with a reference material. In methods like X-ray thickness gauges, the thickness is estimated by measuring the attenuation during transmission through the air layer - sample - air layer, but the attenuation caused by the sample is much greater than that of air, and the effects of vibrations during transport only manifest as changes in the thickness of the air layer, which are minimal. Therefore, high-precision measurements can be made even during transport.
